ONE STOMACH AT A TIME
In the vibrant township of Thembisa, nestled alongside Clayville and Olifantsfontein, one woman is quietly making waves of change, one nourishing meal at a time. Angelinah Tefu, affectionately known as “Mama Angelinah,” is the heart and soul of the kitchen at the Life 4 U Foundation, where her mission goes far beyond filling plates. She feeds dignity, hope, and a profound sense of belonging to the community she loves.
Each morning, before dawn breaks, Mama Angelinah arrives at the modest kitchen at Life 4 U Foundation in Moriting Section, armed with ingredients and an unshakeable resolve. Over the years, the Foundation has served more than 312,765 meals to children and families facing food insecurity in Thembisa and beyond. On any given day, she prepares over a hundred meals, nutritious porridges, stews, rice dishes and ensures every child gets the fuel they need to learn, grow, and thrive. But it’s more than just preparing food; she’s creating a sanctuary. Children streaming in after school are met not only with warm plates but with warm hearts.
Mama Angelinah believes that food is a profound expression of worth. “When a child eats here, I want them to feel seen, cared for, and believed in,” she often says. In a place where many young ones subsist on little more than a single meal each day, her kitchen offers a dependable oasis of comfort.
The Life 4 U Foundation was established in 2013 and registered as an NGO aimed at eradicating poverty and uplifting youth through social development campaigns. Among its pillars is a feeding scheme, an initiative driven largely by Mama Angelinah’s dedication. Without fail, she ensures not just the quality but the love infused in each dish. Community workers and volunteers describe Mama Angelinah as a “mother figure,” a beacon of compassion amid daily struggles. Beyond nutrition, she lends an ear, offers words of encouragement, and provides stability. “We’re not just here to eat,” explains one volunteer. “We’re here to feel known and safe, and Mama Angelinah delivers that every time.”
In South Africa, nearly one in five households report serious food shortages in the past year. In townships like Thembisa, such statistics translate to real hunger, real hardship and children who simply go to bed empty-stomached. That’s why community-led initiatives like Life 4 U are vital .
Yet, despite limited resources, an older stove, pots that bear the wear of constant use—Mama Angelinah refuses to let her spirit wane. “Food heals,” she says quietly. “And if that healing starts with a simple meal, then I will cook.”
Life 4 U has evolved beyond feeding. Its programs span youth skills training, literacy support, poverty and disaster relief, and care for widows and orphans. But it’s in the kitchen where holistic care often begins. A solid meal fuels concentration; a gentle smile nurtures confidence. The Foundation is calling on businesses, volunteers, and donors to bolster its vital work. New ovens, kitchen utensils, ingredient donations, and volunteer cooks would all greatly enhance their reach.
For Mama Angelinah, it’s never about personal recognition. She deflects praise onto the children and community she serves. But ask her why she does it, and her answer is simple: “Because I see their worth. And I want them to feel it too.”
In her eyes, cooking is ministry. It’s love multiplied. It’s hope plated fresh each day. In the heart of Thembisa, Mama Angelinah’s kitchen stands as a testament to community resilience, compassion, and the transformative power of a humble meal.
