Stolen car recovered in Ivory Park
Ivory Park – November often sees an uptick in criminal activity as offenders seek quick cash for the festive season. However, law enforcement agencies are stepping up their efforts to combat crime and ensure the safety of residents in areas like Ekurhuleni, Tembisa, and Ivory Park.
On Saturday, 23 November 2024, at approximately 10:00, members of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Community Liaison Unit apprehended two men, aged 24 and 34, in Ivory Park. The duo faces charges of possession of a stolen motor vehicle, an unlicensed firearm, ammunition, and illicit substances.
The operation began with a tip-off from concerned community members about suspicious activity involving a firearm. Acting swiftly, the EMPD’s specialised officers executed a sting operation at an address on Sechaba Street. Upon arrival, officers found the two suspects smoking cannabis.
A search of the premises uncovered a black and brown 9mm pistol with a defaced serial number, a live round of ammunition, 16 pieces of an illegal rock substance, and additional sachets of cannabis. Further investigation revealed that one suspect was carrying car keys linked to a silver Toyota Corolla parked outside. A system check confirmed the vehicle had been reported stolen in Tembisa.
Both men were detained at Ivory Park Police Station, and all seized items were logged as evidence. They are set to appear in the Tembisa Magistrates’ Court.
Crime statistics reveal that areas like Tembisa and Ivory Park often experience spikes in vehicle theft and other offences during the festive season. According to recent SAPS data, carjackings in Ekurhuleni alone rose by 12% in the past year, with Ivory Park and surrounding areas frequently highlighted as hotspots.
Local law enforcement remains committed to turning the tide against crime. “We are encouraged by the recovery of stolen vehicles and the seizure of firearms. These successes are possible because of strong partnerships with the community,” said an EMPD spokesperson.
Ivory Park residents are also noticing the difference. “I’ve seen stolen cars recovered on my street twice this year. It feels good to know the police are taking action,” said one resident. Another added, “These arrests send a strong message. Criminals are not welcome here.”
The festive season should be a time of celebration, not fear. Residents are urged to remain vigilant, report suspicious activity, and work alongside law enforcement to ensure a safer community for all.
