Did you know that you can now submit your school’s complaint with the Ekurhuleni’s Environmental Health and Safety Requirements? As the 2022 academic year has kickstarted in high gear, the Ekurhuleni municipality wants to ensure that learners and teachers are safe. Schools in the City of Ekurhuleni are encouraged to contact the env ironmental health offices to inspect their premises by the City’s EHPs.
According to a statement issued by Ekurhuleni, the EHPs will be inspecting every school premises, which will be in line with the Environmental Health and Safety Requirements.
According to the National Environmental Health Norms and Standards for Premises and Acceptable Monitoring Standards for Environmental Health published in the National Health Act No 61 of 2003, schools should be inspected at least once a year.
The inspections will focus on:
- Water quality monitoring
- Compliance with food safety standards for schools handling food
- Waste management, including Health Care Risk Waste
- Compliance of structure with the National Building Regulations and Building Standards Act 103 of 1977
- Availability and compliance of toilet and wash up facilities as per the provisions set out in the National Building Regulations and SANS 10400
