COACH MARIA GUIDES KIDS TO VICTORY

In the heart of Vusimuzi Section, a passionate woman is changing lives through sport. Maria Makgoka, founder and coach of the youth soccer team Everyday Heroes, has dedicated over 15 years to nurturing talent and steering local children away from negative influences and toward purpose, discipline, and teamwork.

The Everyday Heroes soccer team was born in March 2008, when Maria saw many young people in her community idle and at risk of going down the wrong path. “I saw the kids doing nothing, and others doing wrong things. I called them, we discussed, and decided to form a team. From then on, we didn’t look back,” she told The Olifant.

Starting with limited resources and an abundance of passion, Makgoka formed a team that now boasts four divisions: Under-11, Under-13, Under-15, and Under-17. The young players have since participated in the TUFA games, where they collected trophies along the way. In 2012, Maria was honoured with the Coach of the Season award, a testament to her leadership and commitment.

Their journey continued to flourish. In 2021, Everyday Heroes joined the LIMA Sports League, and after years of hard work, they were crowned league champions in 2024. Maria beams with pride when she speaks of her players being scouted by football academies and winning the Youth Super Championship just last month.

“Football is more than just a game,” Maria says. “It’s about teaching respect, discipline, hard work, and love not just for the sport, but for each other.”

Despite the victories and recognition, Everyday Heroes face ongoing challenges. The team struggles with access to training equipment, transport costs, and kits. Maria is calling on community members, local businesses, and sports enthusiasts to assist. “Any contributions will be highly appreciated. These kids deserve every opportunity they can get.”

Yet, hope and ambition remain strong. The team is open to accepting new players, with plans to defend their league title and help even more youth gain exposure to professional opportunities in the world of football.

Everyday Heroes is more than just a name, it’s a reality. Thanks to Maria Makgoka, the youth of Vusimuzi have found a path paved with discipline, unity, and dreams of greatness.
