A HELPING HAND IN OUR KASI

By Charmaine Ndaba

In the vibrant township of Thembisa, Gauteng, a transformative force is reshaping lives and uplifting communities. Life 4 U Foundation, a dedicated non-profit organisation, stands as a beacon of hope for individuals facing poverty and unemployment. Rooted in principles of empowerment, dignity, and sustainable development, the Foundation is changing the narrative for many residents, one initiative at a time.

The Foundation operates as a community nutrition development centre and offers a dynamic range of programs aimed at addressing the root causes of poverty and unemployment. Among these is a quarterly computer training program that equips ten students at a time with essential digital literacy, significantly boosting their employability. Another initiative helps individuals obtain driver’s licenses, enhancing their mobility and access to job opportunities. Shortly after completing these programmes, students are helped with job placement.

Entrepreneurial development is also a priority, with a program that teaches aspiring business owners how to create business plans, manage finances, and market their services or products. In support of food security and environmental stewardship, a gardening program trains community members to grow and sustain their own food gardens. In schools, the Foundation promotes hygiene and sanitation through its WASH program, which includes maintaining clean toilets and educating children on proper handwashing techniques. Anathi Kotyana took us through each one of the programmes. “We profile different households and if no one is working, we identify the change agent, meaning someone who will change the situation at home and enrol them on our programmes”, she states.

The impact of Life 4 U Foundation is felt deeply across Thembisa. Each day, it serves approximately 250 people, a testament to the scale and reach of its efforts. Volunteers are an essential part of the organisation’s success, with individuals like Muzikayise Zitha, who has been volunteering for over a year, benefiting from learnerships and being assisted with job placements upon completing their service. This approach ensures that giving back also becomes a pathway to personal and professional growth. Key support for the Foundation comes from the Department of Social Development, whose funding helps sustain and expand the organization’s programs. Life 4 U Foundation also actively fosters partnerships with training institutions, government departments, and other NGOs. These collaborations enhance the quality and breadth of its services, ensuring sustainability and encouraging a shared responsibility in community development.
Life 4 U Foundation is more than a charity; it is a powerful movement grounded in the spirit of ubuntu: “I am because we are.” In a country where poverty and unemployment remain persistent challenges, like this that inspire hope and create real, lasting change.
