Affordable battery rentals now available in Thembisa

Load shedding isn’t leaving us anytime soon, so if you live in Thembisa, Ivory Park, or Olifantsfontein, it’s wise to have alternative power solutions ready for your home or business. While solar panels or generators might be out of reach for many, there’s some good news: BP South Africa is offering a new and affordable way to keep your lights on during power cuts.

Introducing bPOWERd, BP’s innovative battery rental service that ensures you’re powered up, even when Eskom isn’t. “This service offers an accessible and practical solution for homeowners who need reliable power during load shedding,” said BP South Africa in a statement.

If you’re in Ivory Park, you can now sign up for this service at selected BP garages, including BP Kyalami, BP Ebony Park, and BP Empire. Alternatively, you can sign up online at www.bpowerd.com. To get started, simply bring your ID to one of the participating stations. You can pay for your rental in-store, take the battery home, and start powering your essential devices immediately. When the battery runs out, return it to the same station for a swap or your deposit back. BP’s trained energy consultants are on hand to guide you through the process and ensure you’re comfortable using the equipment.

“Customers will need to bring their ID documents before the first rental. They can conveniently pay in-store, take the battery home, and start powering their devices. Customers will bring the battery back to the same store for a swap or a return,” BP explained.

The bPOWERd service is available on a pay-as-you-go basis, giving you flexibility in how long you rent the battery. “Two sizes of batteries are available: the 300W battery and the 1,000W battery. The 300W battery is suitable for small devices like phones, laptops, routers, TVs, and LED lights, while the 1,000W battery can also power larger items such as a TV or small refrigerator,” said BP.

The daily rental fees are affordable: R20 for the 300W battery with a refundable R375 deposit, and R40 for the 1,000W battery with a refundable R575 deposit.

Returning the batteries is just as easy—simply bring them back to the same BP service station where you rented them. You can either exchange a depleted battery for a fully charged one or return it and collect your deposit.

BP has also prioritised safety with these rentals. “For consumer safety, the batteries are designed for easy and secure use. Our system includes clear guidelines for safe handling and use, which are provided to all users,” BP assured customers. They added, “Additionally, we have a dedicated support team available to assist with any issues or concerns regarding battery use. Safety measures also include monitoring battery performance through our digital platform and regular maintenance checks by dedicated engineers to ensure hardware and software is functioning optimally and not posing risks to customers.”
